Digital Citizenship is an extremely important issue that we are attempting to address and emphasize school-wide. As technology continues to influence our lives, it is important that our students and children understand what it means to be good digital citizens. The lesson below may assist you in discussing digital issues with your student(s) to help them use technology wisely and stay safe while using it.
MLA Citation & Reference Resources
As our research papers will be using MLA format, Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) resources will be helpful when we discuss in-text citations and Works Cited pages. For any MLA questions that the OWL does not answer or to check the most recent style changes, we will also refer to the MLA Handbook style blog. Use these outside of class as refreshers or to help you ensure that you are formatting all of your citations correctly.
Alabama Virtual Library
In conducting academic research for our papers and projects, we will be relying on the Alabama Virtual Library to access articles on statistics, opposing viewpoints, and many other important topics. If you are unable to access the AVL databases from home to conduct research, contact me and we will visit with our librarian to correct this issue ASAP!
The Smithsonian Learning Lab
The Smithsonian Learning Lab is a visual resource that will help us connect literature to historical time periods by taking virtual field trips. Feel free to use this to research visuals and artifacts for other classes as well, such as history, government, or science.
The Library of Congress
The Library of Congress's information will also help us with visualizing items from certain time periods, researching historical topics, and reading poetry from the Poetry 180 listing. This is another all-around great source that is similar to the virtual field trips offered with the Smithsonian Learning Lab.
APA Citation & Reference Resources
Much like MLA format, the Purdue OWL has several helpful articles on citing information and formatting papers in APA style. For help with citing electronic media sources, I also recommend visiting the APAstyle blog for recent formatting updates.
